WATTS BAR UNIT 2
CONSTRUCTION/MAJOR MODS – STARTUP TESTING
OVERVIEW

BCP has served the needs of Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) in numerous capacities since the 1990s, providing turn-key and managed projects, as well as leadership consulting and workforce staffing.

CLIENT ISSUE/PROBLEM

TVA suspended construction on Watts Bar Nuclear Plant Unit 2 in the late 1980s, and the plant sat idle for more than 20 years. With the need for additional, clean energy TVA sought to complete and restart WBNP Unit 2 and restore/replace Unit 2 equipment and components to their original specifications to meet the 40-year licensing basis requirement. This overhaul required extensivetesting as part of the Initial Test Program(ITP)to ensure the unit was ready to move from construction to operations.

SOLUTION

Lacking the necessary expertise, TVA was contracted directly by BCP to provide our team of experienced testing and startup support, and technical expertise to lead and ensure the successful performance of ITP which included working with TVA as part of the Joint Technical Working Group (JWTG) and most major construction and testing milestones including system flushing and hydro-testing; Pre-operational testing; Integrated Hot Functional Testing (HFT); fuel load and initial startup testing.

CLIENT BENEFITS

BCP’s team of senior engineering and testing experts was invaluable in providing solutions to issues, testing sequences, problem resolution, and support/leadership for TVA engineering. Watts Bar Unit 2was successfully started after 20+ years of delays and continues to operate successfully.
