Mechanical Engineer - Charlotte, NC

Direct Opportunity

Duration of Work Assignment: 18 months with potential for extension

Pay Rate: Not Defined / need Candidate’s requested rate

US Citizen Required (Due to the nature of work candidates must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident of the United States)


The Mechanical Engineer wil be responsible for preparing modification packages for mechanical and piping systems serving the nuclear power industry.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop design modification packages for mechanical systems at a nuclear power plant, such as piping modifications, system reconfigurations, valve and traveling screen replacements.

  • Perform engineering calculations such as hydraulic analysis, equipment sizing, HVAC sizing, heat load analysis, and pressure loss calculations.

  • Develop mechanical design and procurement specifications; Prepare engineering drawings such as Piping and Instrument Diagrams (P&ID), General Arrangement (GA), Equipment Plan, Piping Orthographic and Isometric drawings.

  • Develop material and workhour estimates as well as engineering and design schedules; Exercise sound engineering judgment in assessing problem situations or complex issues, review completed work to ensure accuracy and compliance with codes and design criteria; and Interface with plant stakeholders to determine project scope/requirements, support construction/implementation and start up activities as required.


Requirements / Education:

  • Candidate must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from a four-year accredited college or university and the ability to obtain unescorted access to a nuclear power plant.

  • Candidate must have 5-12 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering supporting power generation projects, with ideally 2-6 supporting nuclear in a similar role.


Preferred qualifications include:

  • Duke Energy Nuclear experience,

  • Experience with fluid flow software (AFT FATHOM, PROTO-FLO, KYPIPE, or Equivalent),

  • Experience with Fire Protection and Detection Systems and a PE license in the US.


Physical Requirements:Individual may be required to support periodic walkdowns at the site, which would require the ability to walk around the site, climb ladders and/or lift up to 50 lb.
