Project / Position Summary
Seeking an experienced Mechanical Engineer 4 to support a Nuclear Steam Supply System (NSSS) Component Engineering organization, specifically focused on NSSS vessels, structures, and component analysis.
The engineer will perform advanced design and stress analyses of nuclear pressure vessels and/or primary equipment supports for NuScale’s modular advanced light water reactor (ALWR). Work will be performed in accordance with ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC) Section III, applicable NRC regulatory requirements, and ASME NQA-1 quality assurance requirements.
This is a senior-level technical position requiring extensive hands-on experience with ANSYS finite element analysis and nuclear component stress analysis. The engineer may also serve as a technical lead, provide engineering oversight, and mentor less experienced engineers.
Responsibilities
Perform and document engineering evaluations of NSSS components in accordance with ASME BPVC Section III.
Conduct stress analyses addressing:
Pressure loading
Mechanical loading
Thermal loading
Primary stress
Primary + secondary stress intensity ranges
Fatigue
Utilize analysis results to evaluate and optimize nuclear component designs.
Perform detailed finite element analysis using ANSYS.
Support analysis of pressure vessels and/or primary equipment supports.
Interpret project scope, technical requirements, design criteria, applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
Provide technical leadership within the NSSS Component Analysis organization.
Provide engineering oversight and assume responsibility for technical results.
Mentor and provide technical direction to less experienced engineers.
Coordinate with engineers and other disciplines to resolve technical issues and support multidisciplinary design activities.
Develop and maintain required technical and training qualifications.
Support work performed under ASME NQA-1 and applicable NRC quality requirements.
Required Qualifications
B.S. in Engineering, preferably Mechanical Engineering, from a four-year ABET-accredited college or university.
Minimum 10 years of relevant full-time engineering experience.
Extensive experience using ANSYS for finite element/stress analysis.
Extensive experience performing stress analysis in accordance with ASME BPVC Section III.
Demonstrated experience with ASME Section III, Subsection NB and/or NF.
Strong knowledge of nuclear industry engineering codes, standards, and regulations.
Experience performing pressure, mechanical, thermal, primary/secondary stress, and/or fatigue evaluations of nuclear components.
Ability to independently manage complex engineering assignments with minimal oversight.
Ability to provide technical leadership, engineering oversight, and mentoring.
Must be eligible to work under DOE 10 CFR Part 810.
Ability to travel domestically as required.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced engineering degree.
Professional Engineer (P.E.) certification.
Experience with CAD packages.
Programming or engineering automation experience, particularly:
ANSYS APDL
MATLAB
Python
Experience working within ASME NQA-1 quality programs.
Familiarity with 10 CFR 50 Appendix B and 10 CFR 21.
Previous NSSS, reactor vessel, nuclear pressure vessel, or nuclear equipment support analysis experience.
