Radiation Physicist

Work Location:  Berkeley, CA (onsite)

Rate: Up to $90.00/hour (non-exempt)

Hours: 40



Required qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience performing radiation physics and radiation protection functions on large accelerator, research facility, or DOE capital projects.

  • Experience with radiation shielding evaluations, radiation transport analyses, and ALARA principles.

  • Ability to perform radiological hazard assessments and develop related technical documentation. 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to coordinate across multiple technical and project organizations.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience at DOE, nuclear, accelerator, or similar research facilities.

  • Familiarity with accelerator safety evaluations and safety basis documentation. 

  • Prior experience supporting DOE readiness reviews or independent project assessments.


Position Details:  This role provides technical expertise across the design, procurement, fabrication, installation, testing, commissioning, and readiness activities of accelerator, beamline, and associated facility systems. The Radiation Physicist will provide independent technical evaluations, engineering analyses, radiation protection recommendations, and review support to help the project achieve safe, compliant, and efficient execution of work, coordinating closely with the ALS-U Project Office, Engineering, Quality Assurance, Procurement, Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S), Systems Engineering, and other project personnel.



Key Responsibilities:

Radiation Protection Engineering

  • Perform radiation shielding evaluations and radiation transport analyses for ALS-U systems and facilities. 

  • Conduct ALARA evaluations and radiation protection design reviews. 

  • Provide technical recommendations supporting design decisions and evaluate radiological hazards associated with accelerator systems and experimental equipment. 

Accelerator Radiation Safety Support

  • Provide technical consultation supporting accelerator radiation safety throughout the project lifecycle, including accelerator safety evaluations and safety basis documentation support.

  • Review accelerator modifications and evaluate proposed changes for potential radiological impacts.

  • Support configuration management activities affecting radiation safety.

Radiological Hazard Assessments

  • Perform or support radiological hazard evaluations for project work activities, including hazard identification and evaluation of worker exposure.

  • Review work planning documentation and provide recommendations for engineering and administrative controls.

  • Support ALARA planning.

Field Support

  • Provide field support during installation, testing, commissioning, and operational readiness activities, including walkdowns and field observations.

  • Support resolution of technical issues and evaluate changing field conditions.

  • Provide recommendations supporting safe execution of work.

Regulatory Compliance Support

  • Provide technical support to help the project maintain compliance with applicable federal, DOE, Laboratory, and project requirements.

  • Support regulatory assessments, compliance reviews, and documentation reviews.

  • Develop corrective action recommendations and respond to review comments.

DOE Review Support

  • Provide technical assistance supporting DOE reviews and independent assessments. 

  • Support technical presentations, review preparation, and action item resolution.
