Rate: Up to $90.00/hour (non-exempt)

Required qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience performing safety management functions on large construction or complex technical projects governed by DOE O 413.3B or comparable requirements.

• Experience identifying and mitigating industrial, construction, electrical, and hazardous-material hazards.

• Ability to develop and review Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Documents (AHDs), and related work-planning documentation. 

• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to coordinate across multiple technical and safety organizations

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience at DOE, nuclear, accelerator, or similar research facilities involving radiological, lead, and hazardous-material hazards.

• Familiarity with Integrated Safety Management (ISM) principles.

• Prior experience supporting DOE readiness reviews or independent project assessments. 

Position Details:  This role provides safety management, hazard identification and mitigation, work planning and control, field safety oversight, and regulatory compliance support across the full project lifecycle from design and procurement through fabrication, installation, testing, commissioning, and operational readiness. The Safety Professional will function as an integrated member of the ALS-U safety organization, coordinating closely with project management, technical teams, Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S), Radiation Protection, Facilities, Engineering, and other organizations to identify hazards, implement controls, and support safe execution of a large DOE capital project.

Key Responsibilities:

Safety Program Support

• Activities may include safety program assessments, planning support, review of project safety requirements, and development of safety recommendations.

Hazard Identification, Assessment, and Mitigation

• Perform hazard assessments and risk evaluations across project activities.

• Develop and implement hazard mitigation strategies, including engineering, administrative, and work-practice controls, and verify their effectiveness in the field.

• Develop and/or review Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Activity Hazard Documents (AHDs), and other work-planning documentation.

• Identify and evaluate industrial, construction, electrical, radiological, lead, hazardous-material, and other project-specific hazards.

Work Planning and Control

• Perform Work Planning and Control activities for assigned work, including development and review of work packages, identification and incorporation of required controls, readiness verification, field coordination, and confirmation that work is executed in accordance with approved requirements.

Construction and Installation Safety

• Conduct field observations and safety walkthroughs during fabrication, construction, installation, and commissioning activities. 

• Evaluate changing work conditions, review lifting and rigging activities, and support fall protection and confined space work. 

• Coordinate electrical safety and contractor safety activities in the field. 

Design Engineering Reviews

• Participate in engineering and design reviews to evaluate safety considerations throughout the project lifecycle. 

• Activities may include review of engineering drawings, design packages, installation plans, and test procedures.

Regulatory Compliance and Readiness Support

• Support compliance assessments and development of compliance documentation for applicable federal, DOE, and Laboratory safety requirements. 

• Support readiness reviews, including procedure reviews, hazard verification, and closure of action items.

• Provide technical assistance for DOE reviews, independent assessments, and project oversight activities.

Incident Prevention and Corrective Actions

• Provide technical assistance supporting continuous improvement of project safety performance including reviewing incidents and near misses, performing root cause analysis, and providing corrective action recommendations.
