Sr. Electrical Designer
Job Description
Sr. Electrical Designer
Work Location: Torrance, CA (HQ) with periodic travel to the Utah project site (Orangeville, UT)
Rate: Not Defined / need Candidate’s requested rate
Hours: 40+
Per Diem: GSA Rates - M&IE $86.00 & Lodging $199.00 per day = $285.00/day, 7 days per week
Mob/Demob: $500 each way
Job Details: Senior Electrical Designers develop electrical and instrumentation design deliverables across the full plant scope — Reactor, Nuclear Fuel, Power Conversion, and Power Distribution — owning drawing packages end-to-end from development through checking, issue, and as-built incorporation. This is a senior position that also provides checking and technical direction to junior designers and drafting contractors.
Responsibilities:
Develop and maintain electrical deliverables: single-line and three-line diagrams, schematics, wiring and interconnection diagrams, panel schedules, load lists, and motor elementary diagrams
Design power distribution layouts — switchgear, MCCs, panelboards, transformers, UPS and DC systems, lighting and receptacle circuits, and equipment feeds — incorporating load, voltage drop, and short-circuit data from engineers
Cable and raceway design — cable schedules, sizing and voltage-drop checks, tray and conduit routing, fill and derating, and power/signal segregation, including safety-related separation
Control panel and enclosure design — internal layout, wiring diagrams, terminal and marshalling arrangements, nameplate schedules, and UL 508A-consistent bills of material
Grounding, bonding, and lightning protection layouts, including instrument and shield grounding
Hazardous area classification drawings compliant with NEC Article 500/505 or IEC 60079
Instrumentation installation deliverables — hook-up drawings, instrument location plans, loop diagram drafting, junction box layouts, and cable block diagrams
Generate bills of material and take-offs for cable, raceway, panels, and hardware; power-supply sizing; support requisitions and procurement technical evaluations
Field walkdowns, redlines, and as-builts; review and redline vendor and contractor drawing packages
Apply and enforce CAD standards; maintain revision control and document management to nuclear quality requirements; mentor junior designers and drafting contractors
The required qualifications are as follows:
Associate degree or technical diploma in electrical design, drafting, or engineering technology, or equivalent practical experience (Bachelor’s in an engineering discipline is a plus)
5+ years of electrical or I&C design experience in power generation, process industries, or industrial facilities
Proficiency with EPLAN (Electric P8 or equivalent) and/or AVEVA Electrical, with willingness to work in both — including complete, checked, issue-ready drawing packages and database-driven deliverables such as cable schedules and load lists
Hands-on production of one-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and raceway layouts
Working knowledge of the NEC (NFPA 70) as applied to design — wiring methods, conduit fill, cable derating, grounding
Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, loop diagrams, and instrument data sheets
Familiarity with hazardous area classification drawings and wiring methods (NEC Article 500/505 or IEC 60079)
Field walkdown, redline, and as-built experience
Working knowledge of control panel layout, terminal arrangement, and field wiring practice (grounding, shielding, signal segregation)
Strongly Preferred:
Proficiency in both EPLAN and AVEVA Electrical
AutoCAD / AutoCAD Electrical, SmartPlant Electrical / Instrumentation (INtools), or Bentley platforms
3D plant design tools (AVEVA E3D, AutoCAD Plant 3D, SmartPlant 3D, or Revit), including clash detection and model-based drawing extraction
ADDA Certified Drafter, NICET certification, or equivalent credentials
UL 508A listed industrial control panel design
Medium-voltage distribution design (4.16 kV and above), generator connections, and utility interconnection drawings
Cable separation and raceway design per IEEE 384 or equivalent nuclear separation criteria
Nuclear quality familiarity (NQA-1, 10 CFR 50 Appendix B) as applied to design documents, drawing control, and design change traceability
Electrical installation design in nuclear, cleanroom, glovebox, or contamination-controlled environments
Familiarity with IEC 62443 or NIST SP 800-82 as applied to the physical OT network layer
Physical Requirements: Yes — role includes field walkdowns in an active plant/build environment; must be able to access field areas (climbing, walking, kneeling, bending).
